Maintaining health and wellness is vital for everyone, and for people with disability it often takes a more deliberate, holistic approach — one that considers physical, mental and emotional wellbeing together, rather than treating them as separate boxes to tick.

Staying Physically Active

Regular physical activity, adapted to individual ability, supports strength, flexibility and cardiovascular health. What that looks like will vary enormously from person to person: swimming, adaptive yoga, wheelchair sports, or simply a regular walk with a support worker can all make a genuine difference to energy levels and overall fitness.

The goal isn’t intensity, it’s consistency. Small, regular movement adds up over time.

Looking After Mental Health

Mental health deserves the same attention as physical health. Mindfulness practices, hobbies and social activities that bring genuine enjoyment all play a role, and access to professional support such as counselling or therapy can be invaluable for managing stress, anxiety or depression, which are common experiences for many people living with disability.

Building Healthy Routines

A few practical habits make a real difference over time:

  • Regular movement, adapted to what’s achievable and enjoyable
  • Balanced nutrition that works with any dietary or support needs
  • Consistent mental health practices, whether that’s mindfulness, journalling or simply time to decompress
  • Regular medical check-ups, so small issues get caught early
  • Staying socially connected, even in small, low-pressure ways

Advocating for Accessible Healthcare

Everyone deserves healthcare services that genuinely accommodate their needs, not services that require extra effort just to access. Health education and community programs designed with disability in mind help build a stronger sense of belonging and make it easier for people to stay on top of their own wellbeing.
